The play, tracking the life of a woman from 17 to 101, was commissioned and first produced last year by the Detroit Public Theater. Each scene is set on one of the woman’s birthdays.
The production, presented by the nonprofit Roundabout Theater Company and directed by Vivienne Benesch, will mark the Broadway debut for Mr. Haidle, a playwright and screenwriter.
He had early Off Broadway acclaim with such plays as “Mr. Marmalade,” which Roundabout presented in 2005. MCC Theater produced his “Smokefall” in 2016; his latest production is slated to open in Germany.
Ms. Messing, best known for her performance as Grace Adler in television’s “Will & Grace,” has one previous Broadway credit: she starred in John Patrick Shanley’s “Outside Mullingar” in 2014.
“Birthday Candles” is scheduled to start previews April 2 and to open April 21 at the American Airlines Theater.
