Quirino Awards 2020: Full List Of Finalists

The Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards have revealed the finalists for their third edition. The awards, which honor animation from Spain, Portugal, and Latin America, will be held on April 18 in the Spanish city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on the island of Tenerife (part of the Canary Islands).

A total of 22 works — features, shorts, series, and video games — from nine countries are in contention for an award. Portugal is the best-represented country (10 nominations), followed by Spain (7), Argentina (6), Brazil (4), Colombia (2), Bolivia (2), Chile (1), Mexico (1), and Paraguay (1). Several finalists are co-productions which involve more than one country.

These numbers mark something of a reversal: last year’s list was dominated by Spain, and included only three nominations for Portugal. The latter country’s success this year is largely accounted for by Regina Pessoa’s Annecy-winning short Uncle Thomas: Accounting for the Days (4 nominations, pictured top left) and the student film Nestor (3). Sergio Pablos‘s feature Klaus (pictured top right), produced in Spain for Netflix, also has three nominations.
