‘Sing 2’ and ‘The Croods 2’ Release Dates Shifted
Universal Pictures has changed the release date on two major animated sequels, moving Illumination’s Sing 2 to Friday, July 2, 2021, six months later than its originally scheduled December 23, 2020 launch, while pushing DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods 2 out three months into the vacated December 23 date from its originally scheduled release on September 18, 2020, according to a Deadline report.
Sing, written and directed by Garth Jennings and starring Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Hudson and Nick Kroll, generated more than $634 million worldwide when it was released in 2016. Jennings returns for the sequel, as do McConaughey, Witherspoon and Kroll, along with Taron Egerton and Tori Kelly.
Written and directed by Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco and starring Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone and Catherine Keener, The Croods took in more than $587 million globally during its 2013 run. Veteran story artist Joel Crawford is helming the sequel, which has been in development at DreamWorks for a number of years. Cage, Reynolds, Stone and Keener return, joined by newcomers Peter Dinklage and Leslie Mann. DreamWorks first announced the sequel back in April of 2013.
No reason was cited for either date change.
